Ethereum turns unclaimed DAO hack funds into $220M security endowment

Ethereum is repurposing unclaimed funds from the notorious DAO hack in 2016 to determine a roughly $220 million fund geared toward strengthening safety throughout the ecosystem.

The initiative, referred to as the DAO Safety Fund, will direct funds towards auditing, infrastructure, incident response, and consumer safety as Ethereum scales.

Within the DAO hack, the attackers siphoned off about 4.5% of the whole. $ETH This, which was in circulation on the time, brought about Ethereum’s first main disaster and led to a tough fork that break up the community into Ethereum and Ethereum Traditional. Almost a decade later, funds initially put aside for emergency refunds at the moment are getting used to enhance community safety.

This fund is primarily funded by roughly 70,500 individuals. $ETH Roughly $4,600 from unclaimed ExtraBalance withdrawal contracts value roughly $206 million $ETH And the DAO tokens held in Curator Multisig are value roughly $13.5 million. most $ETH is at stake, with an estimated annual income of $8 million to assist ongoing safety efforts.

Funds will probably be distributed by means of DAO-based mechanisms resembling secondary funding, retroactive grants, and ranked selection voting, with the Ethereum Basis setting eligibility standards for every spherical. The grant is predicted to assist work throughout Ethereum’s mainnet, layer 2 community, sensible contracts, incident response, infrastructure, and consumer safety.

Griff Inexperienced, a former DAO curator and member of the white hat group that helped get better funds after the hack, mentioned the purpose is to redirect long-dormant capital to make Ethereum safer because the community helps more and more giant quantities of worth.
